First Indian Developer in Second Life or the dope on being an Indian Metaverse Development Company..
We at Indusgeeks have often spoken about the significance of being one of the very few developers in
I founded Indusgeeks in April, 2007 with help from a close friend and colleague (who I hope will be able to join us full time in 2008). We were lucky to land angel investors who had faith in our capabilities although they didn’t understand the domain at all. And the mission at that time seemed pretty simple. To prove to people, at large, that we weren’t completely crazy.
Virtual Worlds like Second Life were just beginning to start blipping on the Indian media radar at that point and very few people understood what they stood for. They were and still are often misrepresented in the media – by significantly exaggerating their current capabilities or understating and trivializing their potential. To build a company around this dream world/game seemed fantastical and downright insane to many.
The mission here at Indusgeeks Galactic Command Centre in Mumbai has always been to create a new kind of company. A company which works at the cutting edge of media and technology. I always believed that the only way to make that possible is to invest in the best people we can access. However, the best for the Geeks at IG is never about academic merits alone. From the very beginning we have emphasized a culture of inclusive talent and entrepreneurship. To this end we have designed a test which we call the Geeky Gates. Clearing this customized test (for differing roles) according to set benchmarks is the only criterion for entering the Geekdom. Being a college drop out myself , I have always believed that talent doesn’t always reside in classrooms and sometimes overt reliance on learnt knowledge can be a hindrance to adapting in an ever changing environment like ours.
Before I begin to start sounding too congratulatory let us do a quick stock check. This isn’t a statement of victory or validation. It’s more a call to arms to like minded people. Whether Indusgeeks even survives as a company and a clan will only be clear late 2008 or early 2009. It will depend greatly on our ability to move away from being just developers of virtual presences to actually creating utilities and channels to use this unique platform to fulfill genuine industry and human needs. We are already working towards that end with tools and platforms like Rezr ( to be launched soon) and SLJobfinder.com. The pistol has been fired and the race is on. Wish us all ….. good luck, we need it!
